Annex “A” – Duties and Responsibilities
 
Position Overview:
 
The teacher is expected to provide excellent quality instruction for the students at CIS in accordance with the school’s established curriculum, standards and expectations.  Their job is to assure that all students learn the basic and essential skills at each grade level.  They have to lead students toward the fulfillment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and social growth.
 
Responsibilities:
 
INSTRUCTION
 
The classroom teacher is expected to:
 
  1. Plan and implement a program of instruction that adheres to the school’s philosophy and objectives as outlined in the adopted course study.
  2. Make purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies and maximize time on task.
  3. Plan and implement a program of study designed to meet individual needs of students.
  4. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning by employing a variety of appropriate teaching strategies.
  5. Encourage student enthusiasm for the learning process and the development of good study habits.
  6. Provide progress and interim reports as required.
  7. Prepare substitute folder containing appropriate information as required by the principal.
  8. Plan and prescribe purposeful assignments for tutors and volunteers as needed.
  9. Evaluate accomplishments of students on a regular basis using multiple assessment methods such as teacher made tests, samples of students’ work, mastery skills check lists, criterion-referenced tests and norm-referenced tests.
  10. Make appropriate adjustments in the instructional program and as required by the principal.
  11. Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics.
  12. Recognize learning problems and make referrals as appropriate.
  13. Demonstrate a strong grasp of subject matter.
  14. Use effective oral and written expression.
 
 
 
 
 
 
CURRICULUM
 
The classroom teacher is expected to:
 
  1. Keep current subject matter knowledge and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school’s curriculum.
  2. Assist on the ongoing curriculum revision process, including the revision of written coursed of study.
  3. Become acquainted with supplemental services beneficial to students as an extension of regular classroom activities.
 
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
 
The classroom teacher is expected to:
 
1.         Develop, in accordance with school guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.
2.         Take necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
3.         Share responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in all areas of the school.
4.         Provide for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence from the assignment.
5.         Report student illness, accident or injury to the school nurse and /or administration
 
SCHOOL ORGANIZATION
 
The classroom teacher is expected to:
 
  1. Uphold and enforce board policy, administrative procedures and school rules and regulations, and is supportive of them to the public.
  2. Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time
  3. Set annual personal and teaching goals in line with the department and school planning.
  4. Attend staff, department and committee meetings as required.
  5. Cooperate with the administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs.
  6. Maintain an up-to-date attendance register and records of assessment for classes.
  7. Read the staff notice board, memoranda and check pigeonholes daily
  8. Report any situation which might constitute a health and/or safety hazard to students or school employees
  9. Assist the administration and Head of Department in the deployment of staff in the case of staff absence.
  10. Undertake hallway and other supervisory duties as assigned by the Administration
  11. Continue professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences and/or advanced course work at institutions of higher learning
  12. Maintain membership in appropriate professional organizations
 
SCHOOL COMMUNITY
 
The classroom teacher is expected to:
 
  1. Strive to communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public in word and deed.
  2. Work cooperatively with parents to strengthen the educational program for their children
  3. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with other staff members
  4. Be familiar with the diversity of the school community and students’ family background
  5. Communicate regularly with parents on student progress and any problems that may occur.
 
Required Skills and Knowledge:
 
  1. Degree in education or a closely related field
  2. Licensed teacher
  3. Ability to research, develop and implement lesson plans and curricula
  4. Experience working with children and adolescents
  5. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  6. Ability to assess and address educational needs
 
Reports to : Principal and Head of Department
 
Terms of Employment :  Three years as stated in contract
 
Performance Appraisal :
The classroom teacher is evaluated annually by the Principal and Head of Department
